Invasive copepods in the Lower Columbia River Estuary: Seasonal abundance, co-occurrence and potential competition with native copepods

Abstract: Research on the ecology and impacts of the zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) has developed in parallel with the long history of their spread across Europe and to North America. There is less scientific knowledge however about the quagga mussel (Dreissena rostriformis bugensis). The recent spread of both zebra and quagga mussels to the Western states of the USA, has spurred on dreissenid research. The 17th International Conference on Aquatic Invasive Species (ICAIS), was held in San Diego, California in Septe… Show more

“…Shaded counts from FlowCAM, unshaded counts from microscopy. Blank fields indicate taxa not present or not counted ish lower estuary up into the Snake River tributary (Cordell et al 2008), and high abundances of P. forbesi have been recorded at salinities from 0−12 (Bollens et al 2012). In its native range in the Yangtze River and estuary in China, P. forbesi is found in salinities up to at least 8 (Orsi & Walter 1991).…”

“…The effects of salinity on the mortality or reproduction of this species have not previously been investigated in any system, and the only relevant information on salinity effects is on distribution (Orsi & Walter 1991, Cordell et al 2008, Bollens et al 2012). …”

“…Invasive zooplankton . Another environmental stressor acting in the CRE is the introduction and establishment of invasive zooplankton species (Bollens et al ; Dexter et al , ), which have the potential to dramatically alter the overall planktonic food web by grazing upon phytoplankton taxa that may enhance HAB frequency (Bowen et al ), as well as by displacing native zooplankton taxa that support critical fish and invertebrate populations in the CRE (e.g., salmon; Bollens et al ; Adams et al ).…”
