“…Although Nannizziopsis species have been documented as the cause of disseminated disease in humans 21 , 43 , the species involved are different to those affecting reptiles 7 , 8 . Nannizziopsis barbatae isolates obtained in this and a prior study showed no growth at 35 °C 8 , and it is unlikely that this fungus poses a risk to human health.…”

“…All came from sub-Saharan West Africa or Africa when national origin was reported ( Tables 1 , 2 ; Figure 3 ). The preferred migration routes explained by historical reasons—The Gambia to England route ( 7 ) and Mali, Senegal, and Guinea to France route—observed in our case-series and in the literature ( 6 ), might have introduced bias. However, France and England also have immigrants from other parts of Africa, and Nannizziopsis spp.…”

“…Human infections with Nannizziopsis species are rare with only 8 cases reported in the medical literature ( Table 1 ) [ 3–9 ]. Almost all reported cases have been in immunocompromised individuals who have lived in or traveled to West Africa, yet no specific source of infection or epidemiologic association has been identified.…”

“…Almost all reported cases have been in immunocompromised individuals who have lived in or traveled to West Africa, yet no specific source of infection or epidemiologic association has been identified. In humans, sites of infection have included bone and joint [ 8 ], skin [ 4 ], lungs [ 4 , 7 ], brain [ 3 , 6 ], and disseminated disease [ 4–6 , 9 ]. Outcomes have ranged from full recovery with or without antifungal treatment to death, yet the optimal antifungal therapy and duration is unknown.…”
