Inventing the Future through Money—Images of Monetization in Nineteenth-Century American Patents

Abstract: This paper explores patents for monetary objects as mechanisms for exploring the future of money and its role in society. By looking at families of patents around monetary objects, the paper highlights the ontological, pecuniary, and pedagogical expectations about the use of money in nineteenth century American societies.
