“…While the instructor noted "a few minor grammar issues," including some marked instances of dropped articles and the potentially mistyped "man" for "hat" in "wearing like a southern country man," David's instructor cast them in his written commentary as problems that could be caught with last-stage proofreading. No doubt, as in the academic/social/professional crossovers that Cho (2015Cho ( , 2017 and Fraiberg et al (2017) note, David's early success in and comfort with this common assignment in a U.S.-style writing course would have circulated among peers.…”

“…They argue that the labels "learning lords" and "scumbags," circulated among Chinese students through their dense online social networks, provide a limited and limiting typology for student identities even as students cross national boundaries. Asia Campus students certainly used social media to communicate, study, and pursue leisure, but it is likely that the far less dense and still-inchoate social environment of the campus coupled with its public identity as a U.S. campus in Korea precluded at least some of the academic cliquishness Fraiberg et al (2017) observed. And David himself, through interviews and writing assignments, resisted settling firmly on anything like a label.…”

“…Confucianism advocates hierarchical disciplines within a family, which constitutes the basic unit of the Chinese social hierarchy system (Fan et al, 2017). The vision of building a harmonious socialist society (社会主义和谐社会) and president Xi Jinping’s “Chinese dream” both show similarity with Confucianism (Fraiberg et al, 2017; Link, 2015). In addition to the shared emphasis on “harmonious coexistence between humans and the natural world” (Fraiberg et al, 2017), the Chinese dream emphasizes the national pride and the love of not only China but also the Communist Party, showing similarities with the Confucian value of loyalty and patriotism (Link, 2015).…”

“…Phillips (2014) draws on Leki’s findings to analyze the practices of an Indonesian graduate student in the United States, Chozin. While Chozin employed a range of strategies, one of his primary strategies was “using current experience or feedback” (Leki, 1995, p. 240), including seeking help from a “network of peers” or “editor‐friends” (Phillips, 2014, p. 76), a practice documented in other research on multilingual writers (Fraiberg, Wang, & You, 2017; Lei, 2008, 2016; Riazi, 1997). By the end of his studies, Chozin had achieved numerous successes, including his department’s thesis award, an accomplishment that Phillips attributes more to his “resourcefulness, leadership” and “knowledge of his field” than his “writing ability” (p. 88).…”
