Inventory and assessment of pH in cropland and grassland soils in Germany#

Abstract: Background Soil pH is one of the key factors affecting soil fertility. For optimal plant growth on agricultural land, suitable liming management is recommended. The basis of appropriate soil pH management in agriculture is provided by recommendations on site‐specific optimum pH ranges and lime application. Aims This study determined the current variability of soil pH of cropland and grassland in Germany, analysed the factors associated with this variability, evaluated pH management on German agricultural land … Show more

“…The pH increases as the amount of clay increases. Clay content increases the ability of soils to neutralize acids by consuming protons associated with chemical weathering of silicates and binding protons on the surface of clay particles with a permanent negative charge (Müller et al., 2021).…”

“…The precipitation seasonality with higher summer precipitation causes higher soil moisture during the warm and biologically active season and could thus enhance soil denitrification. Additionally, high soil pH might cause high soil denitrification in cluster three, as shown for southern Germany (Müller et al, 2022). Groundwater denitrification in catchment cluster three is relatively low compared to the others due to low soil N leaching.…”

“…The optimal pH range for the majority of plants is between 5.5 and 7.0. Alkaline pH is more than 7, whereas acidic pH is less than 7 72 . Parent material, organic matter content, and inorganic matter content are the key factors affecting grassland soil pH.…”
