Inventory and comparison of abundance of parasitic copepods on fish hosts in the western Wadden Sea (North Sea) between 1968 and 2010

Abstract: A conspicuous part of the parasite fauna of marine fish are ectoparasites, which attach mainly to the fins or gills. The abundant copepods have received much interest due to their negative effects on hosts. However, for many localities the copepod fauna of fish is still poorly known, and we know little about their temporal stability as long-term observations are largely absent. Our study provides the first inventory of ectoparasitic copepods on fish from the western Wadden Sea (North Sea) based on field data f… Show more

“…Unfortunately, this is not the case for marine crustaceans of the North Sea, and until now only very rough estimates exist for many taxa. Most available lists rely on taxon-specific publications [ 86 , 87 ] or national red lists that focus on specific areas of the North Sea [ 88 ]. As consequence we are unable to provide valid estimates of species coverage for the crustacean taxa analyzed in our study.…”

“…With more than 15,000 described species to date [ 45 ], copepods are the dominant component of the holozooplankton, both numerically and in terms of biomass [ 96 ], and represent an essential element of aquatic food chains [ 97 , 98 ]. The number of calanoid copepods of the North Sea ranges between 15 and 25 species [ 99 ], and about 50 parasitic species of fish are known [ 87 , 100 ]. In contrast to this, the total number of harpacticoid copepods is still unclear.…”

“…Females are scarce [2,20] and were thoroughly redescribed in 2016 [20]. Records are known from Wimereux, France [24] and from the Western Wadden Sea and the Netherlands [25], and therefore, the species was expected to occur in the BPNS. The current distribution of C. brevicaudatus is enigmatic and few reliable records exist (Fig.…”
