Inventory and monitoring of historical cultural heritage buildings on a territorial scale: a preliminary study of structural health monitoring based on the CARTIS approach

Abstract: Earthquakes induce dynamic stresses in structures, and past seismic events have demonstrated that existing heritage buildings are highly vulnerable. This vulnerability applies to both reinforced-concrete and masonry buildings, which are concentrated in historic centres throughout Italy. Significant variations in construction account for the inadequacy of existing structures to withstand seismic actions, such as the materials used and the construction details, which can be neglected in building practices. “…Urban seismology is now an important field of research both from seismological and engineering points of view [13][14][15][16]. It finds the most important applications in seismic microzonation studies in densely inhabited areas and monitoring historical buildings [15,17].…”

“…An example of an urban-scale safeguard was treated by the authors in [16], [17], where an intervention on entire districts at risk was designed using a monitoring system based on the CARTIS project. In order to guarantee the management and maintenance, not of a single construction, but of a set of buildings and infrastructures sharing the same risk of collapse, an improvement has been achieved in recent years through the implementation of the Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm in the SHM systems [18]- [20]. The basic components of the SHM-IoT system are: (i) Smart Object (SO), (ii) gateway, (iii) Remote Control and Service Room (RCSR) and (iv) Open Platform Communications (OPC) server.…”
