Inventory of medium and large-sized mammals from Serra do Brigadeiro and Rio Preto State Parks, Minas Gerais, southeastern Brazil

Abstract: Cerrado and Atlantic Forest brazilian biomes are biodiversity hotspots that still have few areas under legal protection, especially on Minas Gerais State. Protected areas are essential to maintain environmental services, and it is necessary to know the fauna present and protected. With this aim, a medium and large sized mammal survey was conducted from January to December 2006 on two brazilian parks, trough tracks stations and active searches. These parks were Serra do Brigadeiro State Park (Atlantic Forest re… Show more

“…Moreover, field guides often neglect the known overlap between small felid footprint size and shape, as well as the possible bias introduced by the presence of domestic cats (Felis catus), which often become feral [9]. Several authors have adopted more conservative methods, providing identifications to the genus level [11,[15][16][37][38][39][40][41][42], or only associating footprints with species when (1) individuals were observed by the team [41,43], (2) settlers confirmed the species presence in face-to-face interviews [42], or (3) in the presence of complementary methods (e.g., scats collected near footprints are identified by molecular techniques or microscopic analyzes of fur found in feces [44]).…”

“…According to a mammal census conducted in the RPSP in 2006, there is no record of any sloths occurring in this area (Oliveira et al, 2013). Although this census was based mostly on footprints found along roads and transects, the lack of records for Bradypus spp.…”

“…The capões of the Espinhaço Range have a high floristic similarity with the semi-deciduous forests associated with the Atlantic Forest of southeastern Brazil (Coelho, 2014). Such vegetal formations and the occurrence of the primate Callithrix geoffroyi (Humboldt, 1812) in the RPSP (Mesquita & Passamani, 2009;Oliveira et al, 2013), a typical species of the Atlantic Forest, indicate that the region is an ecotone zone between this biome and the Cerrado.…”
