Inverse Hybrid Laminate for Lightweight Applications

Abstract: Because of their high specific stiffness and strength, fiber reinforced plastics (FRP) are preferred lightweight materials. Recent developments show a growing industrial interest in the integration of thermoplastic FRP in complex structures for high volumes. However, there are still shortcomings for these materials concerning the insufficient energy absorption in case of failure and the limited opportunities available for the assembly with other components. Improvements in the crash performance can be achieved… Show more

“…The test conditions are given in Table 3. The research described in this article extends the results of analyses presented by the author in an earlier publication [3], which presents the results of the ILSS test in the form of the measured shear stresses (τ max , τ B ) in the specimens described in Table 1. The results of the ILSS SBS test are given in Table 4.…”

“…Fiber metal laminates (FMLs) [1], also referred to as hybrid metal composites [2] or hybrid laminates [3], are materials combining polymer matrix composite laminates with fiber-reinforced polymers (FRPs) and metal sheets. They allow the synergy of the characteristics of the constituting materials: high ductility of the metal alloys and the strength of the composites [4].…”

“…Modern-day technologies drive the development of new hybrid materials. Hybrid laminates are the newest combination of different materials and are being quickly developed by top universities in the European Union (Osiecki 2020;Tomasz et al 2017). One of the characteristic groups of hybrid laminates is Fiber Metal Laminates (FMLs) (Salve et al 2016;Balkumar et al 2016).…”
