Inverse Linking Constructions

Abstract

The chapter gives an overview of inverse linking constructions in English and German. Section 2 provides a detailed discussion of the structural and semantic properties of inverse linking and its lexical and structural constraints. Section 3 discusses syntactic analyses in terms of Quantifier Raising and Logical Form adjunction to S or DP, respectively. Section 4 discusses semantic analyses that interpret the quantified expressions in situ. Section 5 discusses inverse linking from the perspectives of structural economy and crosslinguistic variation. Section 6 looks at the related construction of nested definites.
