Inverse Nacre-like Epoxy-Graphene Layered Nanocomposites with Integration of High Toughness and Self-Monitoring

Abstract: Inverse nacre-like epoxy-graphene layered nanocomposites inspired by nacre are fabricated via freeze casting. The epoxy-graphene nanocomposites show a toughening mechanism that incorporates crack deflection, branching, and interfacial friction, exhibiting excellent fracture toughness. Furthermore, due to the conductive properties of the continuous graphene-based scaffold, crack propagation can be monitored by detecting variable electrical resistance. The inverse nacre-like epoxy-graphene nanocomposites expand … Show more

“…[126] In this way, agglomeration of the graphene nanofillers can be avoided, and the toughening mechanism follows that of natural nacre with the efficient stress relaxation coming from crack bridging, branching, and deflection. Using a different type of epoxy can lead to additional shape memory properties [127] or self-monitoring abilities [128] as well as improved toughness. Otherwise, self-monitoring capabilities can be introduced by functionalizing the GO nanosheets to achieve crack-dependent electrical response.…”

“…In engineering, the demand for structural materials with properties such as light weight, high strength, high toughness, high dimensional stability, and impact resistance is driving all innovations. 1,2 Take airplane construction as a case: the first airplanes were made of wood, then the phase of aluminum started, followed now by carbon-fiber-reinforced composites for the newest passenger airplanes. Traditional materials, e.g., metals, ceramics, and polymers, have different building blocks, different bonds, and thus different properties.…”
