Abstract. This paper discusses the formation of stable arches in granular materials by using a series of laboratory tests. To this aim, a developed trapdoor apparatus is designed to find dimensions of arches formed over the door in cohesionless aggregates. This setup has two new important applications. In order to investigate the maximum width of the opening generated exactly on the verge of failure, the door can be open to an arbitrary size. In addition, the box containing granular materials (or base angle) is able to be set on optional angles from zero to 90 degrees with respect to the horizontal. Therefore, it is possible to understand the effect of different levels of gravity accelerations on the formed arches. It is observed that for all tested granular materials, increasing the door size and decreasing the base angle, both cause to increase the width and height of the arch. Moreover, the shape of all arches is governed by a parabola. Furthermore, the maximum door width is approximately five to 8.6 times the particle size, depending on the internal friction angle of materials and the base angle.

The horizontal directional drilling technology is widely used to lay the underground pipelines. These pipelines are of small or medium diameters with a dip angle ranging from 10°to 20°, special pipelines to 30°. In-pipe robot is commonly used to detect the pipeline fault. A new type of telescopic in-pipe robot is designed in this article, which is driven by step motor and screw, and supported by wheels. The robot has advantages of waterproof grade of IP68, stable motion state, and larger traction force. The speed is between telescopic robots and wheeled robots. Through force analysis and calculation, its maximum climbing angle is larger than 35°. The robot has good passing ability through the pipelines with bends. The inertial technology is used to locate the robot under the condition of disturbances. The pipeline fault detection algorithm based on the visual identification technology is designed to detect the pipeline fault. It can not only achieve autonomic positioning but also detect the pipeline fault.

Soil pressure calculation method for Trenchless pipe based on the Terzaghi Soil Arching Theory have been defined in Chinese national standard GB50332-2002, North America standard ASTM F1962-09 and European standard BS EN 1594-2009. At present, the calculation results from all of the three standards have shown discrepancies with the measured soil pressure. There is little research on the issue of discrepancies in each standard based on the same Terzaghi soil arching theory. The comparison has been made to investigate the differences among all the three standards. The conclusions can be made that the calculation in both GB50332 and ASTM F1962 ignores the cohesion and compressibility of the soil, using the same method to calculate sand soil and clay soil, and does not fully consider the effect of the internal friction angle of soils, which lead to a small impact of the soil properties on the arching factor. The BS EN 1594 standard considers the cohesion strength of soils and uses two different methods for pressure of sand soil and clay soil, respectively; The comparisons show that the cohesion strength has a significant impact on soil pressure, and that the former two standards showed a higher soil pressure than BS EN 1594 since both of them ignored the cohesion strength of soils.
