Investigating Country Differences in Mobile App User Behavior and Challenges for Software Engineering

Abstract: Mobile applications (apps) are software developed for use on mobile devices and made available through app stores. App stores are highly competitive markets where developers need to cater to a large number of users spanning multiple countries. This work hypothesizes that there exist country differences in mobile app user behavior and conducts one of the largest surveys to date of app users across the world, in order to identify the precise nature of those differences. The survey investigated user adoption of t… Show more

“…International Organization for Standardization (ISO) defines usability as "the effectiveness, efficiency, and satisfaction with which specified users achieve specified goals in particular environments" [19] and Nielsen [20] defines it as "a quality attribute that measures the usability of user interfaces and the reference methods to improve ease of use during the design process." A poor usability is the main discontinuing factor from app usage [11,17,21]; hence, it is important to study the usability in desktop applications, but it is even more important to address it in mobile apps because mobile devices are the first and most used electronic devices in the world [22,23] with a large number of users [24].…”

“…Previous literature on culture has focused to identify the reflected culture in our daily life such as design of website (Ko et al, 2013), mobile apps (Lim et al, 2014) and advertising (Singh et al, 2004) and to understand its influences on consumers' behavioral areas such as attitude and WTP. However, limited attention has given to more fundamental area, the effect of culture on perception process.…”

“…Overall, the set of studies is dominated by European researchers, who have been involved in 19 of the 30 selected studies. In particular, the University College London has been involved in 4 of the studies ( [19], [20], [30], and [31]). Figure 7 shows a map with the representativeness of the institutions where the 30 selected papers were written.…”
