Mental health is a key component of overall health and well-being (WHO, 2021). During 2020-21, an estimated 1 in 5 (5.0 million) Australians experienced a psychiatric disorder, including schizophrenia, depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, and bipolar disorder. During the same period, approximately 2.9 million Australians' received Medicare-subsidized mental health-specific services through the Australian Government Medicare Benefits Schedule, which includes up to 20 Medicare-subsidized psychological therapy sessions per year (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2022; Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, 2022). Given the prevalence of psychiatric disorders in the Australian population, genetic counselors are likely to encounter patients with a personal and/ or family history of psychiatric disorders on a daily basis.
