Abstract. New bacterial strains resistant to high concentration of mercury were obtained and character iz ed focusing on their potential application in bioremediation. The biological material was isolated from soil contaminated with mercury. The ability to removal of Hg from the liquid medium and the effect of the various pH and mercury concentrations in the environment on bacterial strains growth kinetics were tested. The selected strains were identified by analysis of the 16S ribosome subunit coding sequenc es as Pseudomonas syringae. The analysis of Hg concentration in liquid medium as effect of microb ial metabolism demonstrated that P. syringae is able to remove almost entire metal from mediu m after 120 hours of incubation. Obtained results revealed new ability of the isolated strain P. syrin ga e . Analyzed properties of this soil bacteria species able to reduce concentration of Hg or immob i lize this metal are promising for industrial wastewater treatment and bioremediation of the soils pollu t ed especially by mercury lamps scrapping, measuring instruments, dry batteries, detonators or burning fuels made from crude oil, which may also contain mercury. Selected bacteria strains provide efficient and relatively low-cost bioremediation of the areas and waters contaminated with Hg.

The aim of the present study was to examine comparative effects of different concentrations of heavy metals such as cadmium (Cd), cobalt (Co), lead (Pb) and mercury (Hg) on catfish oocyte maturation and ovulation. Post-vitellogenic oocytes of the catfish H. fossilis were incubated with heavy metals at concentrations of 0.1, 1.0, 10 and 50ng/ml. Translucent follicles without germinal vesicle and opaque follicles with GV were scored after 4, 8, 16, and 24 hr of incubation. Percentage GV breakdown (GVBD) was calculated as an index of oocyte maturation. The results of present investigation suggested that the effect of heavy metals on oocyte maturation and ovulation was in the order of Pb > Hg >Cd>Co. Pb and Hg showed significant increases (P<0.05) in GVBD and ovulation at all concentrations during 4 and 8hr of the incubation. However, there was a dose -dependent decrease at 16 and 24hr. Cd and Co showed decline in GVBD and ovulation at 16 and 24 hr of the incubation. However, mercury and lead showed a stimulatory effect on ovulation at 16 and 24 hr compared to control (P<0.05). Thus, these results suggest that catfish oocytes are differentially influenced by heavy metals and are resistant to them at certain levels.

Environmental Services Associated With the Reclamation of Areas Degraded by Mining: Potential for Payments for Environmental Services

This paper discusses the potential of associating environmental services (ES) with techniques for reclaiming degraded areas (RDA) used in the mining sector, considering the current trends in payments for environmental services (PES) in Brazil. A literature review with content analysis generated results which identified the ES generated for eight cases of RDA in mining. As an example, ES related to soil enhancement were found. A more extended review of general RDA techniques confirmed the potential for associating other ES to RDA techniques used in mining, an example here is the enhancement of carbon stocks. Support for actions could come from existing PES schemes, particularly for cases where the ES identified as associated with an RDA technique are related to soil and water conservation. Concluding remarks indicate that there is a potential scenario for ES diversification in the reclamation stage of mining operations. A first step towards accomplishing this diversification envisages the creation of a PES scheme specific to the mining sector. Further studies are needed to develop criteria for fostering a PES scheme specifically for the reclamation phase of mining operations in Brazil.
