Investigating insomnia as a cross-sectional and longitudinal predictor of loneliness: Findings from six samples

Abstract: Loneliness has been repeatedly associated with sleep problems; however, there is a dearth of research examining the prospective relationship between insomnia and loneliness, as well as this association controlling for other psychiatric symptoms. This study evaluated the cross-sectional and prospective relationship between insomnia and loneliness using six samples: 666 undergraduates; 2,785 Army recruiters; 208 adults with a history of suicidality and/or depression; 343 adult psychiatric outpatients; 326 young … Show more

“…the Chicago Health, Aging, and Social Relations Study). There were three cases of sample overlap across articles (Cacioppo et al, 2002a(Cacioppo et al, , 2002bHom et al, 2017aHom et al, , 2017bMcHugh et al, 2011;McHugh and Lawlor, 2013). “…Both studies that measured sleep quality objectively (Cacioppo et al, 2002a: polysomnography;Kurina et al, 2011: actigraphy) found a bivariate association for a dimension of sleep quality. All studies that assessed sleep adequacy (Jaremka et al, 2014;Segrin and Passalacqua, 2010), sleep satisfaction (Jacobs et al, 2006), or change in sleep (Hom et al, 2017b) detected a bivariate association between these variables and loneliness. None of the studies that examined sleep duration detected an effect (Cacioppo et al, 2002a;Hawkley et al, 2010;Hays and DiMatteo, 1987;Kurina et al, 2011).…”

“…Therefore, those previous studies have shed light on mind–body connections via associations between loneliness and sleep. It has been posited that loneliness might lead to being on a high level of alert for threats during one's sleep (Hom et al, ), whereas positive social relationships are associated with high‐quality sleep (Cacioppo et al, ). The previous studies further highlighted the potential connections among social relationships, loneliness and nighttime sleep in older adults.…”

“…In turn, sleep disorders may appear to lead to further HPA axis dysregulation, thereby promoting a vicious cycle of stress and insomnia [27]. From another point of view, there is evidence of a bidirectional association between insomnia and loneliness [28], providing an explanation for the positive effects of family support.…”
