The study examined the use of Pixton to support the teaching of English as a foreign language (EFL) writing to students at a private university in southern Ecuador. For this purpose, 52 EFL students (male and female, aged 19–24 years old) who were enrolled in a writing course participated in the study for a period of five months. At the start, most of these students had an A1+ proficiency level, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The study employed an action research design. A diagnostic test was applied at the beginning of the instruction period, and, at the end, a final exam and a perceptions questionnaire were administered. The findings indicate positive perceptions about Pixton, and students’ online writing skills improved due to the pedagogical use of this technological tool. Furthermore, Pixton increased students’ engagement, motivation and dynamic work to a remarkable extent. Finally, an improvement was observed in aspects of students’ writing, such as grammar, vocabulary, coherence and cohesion.

The subject of history is often considered uninteresting due to its extensive content and traditional teaching methods. Consequently, students tend to lose motivation and enthusiasm towards the subject. Therefore, teachers are required to adopt creative teaching approaches, such as using learning media and implementing engaging teaching strategies. Hence, this study aimed to examine the influence of problem-based learning-based PowToon audio-visual media on the learning motivation of 7th-grade students regarding history at MTs Pamulangan. The study employed an experimental research approach using the Posttest-Only Control Design with 33 seventh-grade students randomly selected as the research sample. Data were collected using questionnaires to measure research variables. The effectiveness of problem-based learning audio-visual PowToon media on students' motivation to learn history was analyzed using the t-test via a paired sample t-test, preceded by normality and homogeneity tests. The results showed that students in the experimental class who received the treatment exhibited a higher motivation level (average of 66.13) than those in the control class who did not use PBL-based PowToon media (average of 61.52). Furthermore, students showed a greater interest in learning history when utilizing PBL-based PowToon media, as evidenced by the t-count value of 2.034, exceeding the t-table value of 1.68. Therefore, H0 was rejected, and H1 was accepted. In conclusion, a significant difference was observed between the average history learning motivation of the experimental and control classes.

Breaking Textbook Barriers: PowToon Videos in Engaging ICT Learning for Young EFL Learners

The significant interest in the development and integration of information and communication technologies (ICT) in the field of education is still marked with an unequal level of performance in many areas. This research explores the researcher-teacher collaboration of creating and using PowToon video in teaching English to achieve the mission of elevating the ICT competence of teachers and students in schools, especially in areas that are underdeveloped or far from the central government. The participants of the study include the sole English teacher of SD Kartika VI-7 Malang and twenty students in the fifth grade. Through four steps (analysing, designing, implementing, evaluating), this descriptive qualitative study collected data from classroom observation, teacher interview, expert analysis of the developed media, and short evaluation questionnaire. Results from the analysis stage confirmed the preliminary results of the English class’s minimal ICT usage. The design stage is where the researchers and the teacher worked together to adapt the textbook materials into interesting PowToon video for the students. The implementation stage is where the teacher used the video validated by three experts of material, media, and language. Finally, the media’s effectiveness is evaluated based on the questionnaire responses given by the students. The research concludes that the validation process of the PowToon ascertained its quality for effective English instruction to motivate student engagement. Although neither PowToon video nor its implementation is particularly new, they are novel, effective, and—arguably most importantly—friendly teaching media for classrooms that have yet to adapt with the rapid technological world.
