Investigating service features to sustain engagement in early intervention mental health services

Abstract: Patients, family members and professionals shared a number of preferences about what service characteristics will optimize patient engagement in early intervention services but diverged on others. Providing effective crisis support as well as a range of treatment options should be prioritized in the future design of early intervention services.

“…Conditions such as anxiety and depression may lead to heightened negative responses to obstacles, which can be debilitating. Additionally, serious mental health conditions can deteriorate very quickly without early intervention leading to a point of crisis (Becker et al, 2019). Consequently, it seems likely that the sorts of impediments to accessing primary care described by Bernadette may have a disproportionate effect on people with mental health problems, leading to enhanced experiences of care discontinuities whilst self-managing under the GP.…”

“…The service was initially constructed around the concept of patient navigators (Bieling, Madsen, & Zipursky, 2013), linking clients to existing services. Youth preferences included: choice of multiple treatment modalities; family involvement; availability of physicians, nurses and doctoral level staff; integrated addictions services and text message or phone support (Becker et al, 2017).…”

“…In these environments, service users are offered a diverse range of treatments such as cognitive behavioural therapy, dialectical behavioural therapy, and medication (Citizens Information, 2020 ; Health Service Executive, 2022 ). As a consequence of not accessing appropriate services, the benefits of early intervention, such as increased rate of recovery and reduced hospitalization rates (Allouche et al, 2021 ; Becker et al, 2019 ; Peiper et al, 2017 ), are often rendered impossible to adolescents.…”
