Purpose This study aims to investigate the dynamic relationship between renewable and non-renewable energy sources on the economic growth of eight countries, the capital stock and labour force being used as control variables in each case. Questions that need to be asked include the following: Is there is an asymmetric and, hence, a non-linear relationship between variables? If yes, how does economic growth interact with both renewable and non-renewable energy consumption (EC)? How different are these relationships in the countries highly rated in the performance of renewable EC compared to those lowly rated? Design/methodology/approach This paper uses asymmetric quantile-based methods to extract possible asymmetric and, hence, non-linear relationships between the underlying variables. Findings A newly developed asymmetric panel quantile approach suggests that EC has a significant effect on economic growth in both directions of shocks as well as for the considered sample. The results further support the findings in recent literature on renewable energy deployment, given the importance of renewable EC for economic growth with the increased levels of renewable EC, although the initial investments may have a negative effect on economic growth for some countries. Originality/value This study contributes to the literature in twofold. Firstly, it aims to contribute to the ongoing debate in literature by incorporating both renewable and non-renewable energy resources in the production function with labour and capital to test their asymmetric impact on economic growth. Secondly, this paper uses asymmetric quantile-based methods to extract possible asymmetric and, hence, non-linear relationships between the underlying variables. Another point that should be emphasised in this study is the need for studies analysing economic growth and EC for a sample of G20 countries based on a comparative view for the renewable and non-renewable EC in literature.

This paper examines the causal impact of the technological innovation, trade openness and economic growth on the renewable energy use (RE) in Germany, the United Kingdom and Turkey. To this end, Breitung and Candelon (Journal of Econometrics, 2006, 132, 363) causality test linked to Toda and Yamamoto (Journal of Econometrics, 1995, 66, 225) procedure is applied on data for the period 1985–2021. Our results indicate that the German RE is mainly affected by the technological innovation and economic growth, but over the long‐term. Regarding the United Kingdom, its RE dynamics is found to be significantly impacted by the technological progress, trade openness and output growth all together, but only during the long‐run. However, in Turkey, the RE long‐term pattern is mainly led by the technological innovation, while the RE short‐term dynamics is primarily drown by the trade openness. This study provides policymakers a better understanding of RE pattern to formulate appropriate policies dealing with energy security, sustainable development and environmental pollution.

Renewable Energy Consumption-Growth Nexus in European Countries: A Sectoral Approach

The renewable energy consumption plays a significant role in achieving sustainable development, but a sectoral approach is necessary to design the better recommendations for each sector. In this context, the main objective of this paper is to assess the impact of the use of this type of energy on economic growth in 23 European Union (EU) member states in the period 1990–2020. Besides overall renewable energy consumption, different utilisations of this energy are considered: in industry, transport, in commercial and public services, and for residential purposes. The methodological background is built around panel data models that start from a Cobb–Douglas function. The renewable energy consumption is considered an important factor that should generate economic growth. The panel data approach based on causality analysis and Augmented Mean Group and Common Correlated Effects Mean Group estimators suggests that renewable energy use in industry does not determine economic growth, but economic development is a cause for more utilisation of this energy in industry. In addition, more renewable energy consumption in transport enhances economic growth. A high level of economic development can promote the consumption of renewable energies in industrial sectors. In this way, industrial companies can allocate more financial funds to research in the field of renewable energies and can afford to adopt renewable energy sources. Investment in biofuels can contribute to achieving sustainable transport in the EU.
