Investigating the combined effects of workaholism and work engagement: A substantive-methodological synergy of variable-centered and person-centered methodologies

Abstract: The present series of three independent studies examines how workaholism and work engagement combine relying on a variety of distinct methodologies: interaction effects (Study 1, n = 160), a person-centered approach (Study 2, including two samples of n = 321 and 332), and a hybrid mixture regression approach (Study 3, n = 283). This research also documents the relations between workaholism, work engagement, and work outcomes (i.e., work-family conflicts, work performance, sleeping difficulties, and burnout). F… Show more

“…Studies consistently show that WA is associated with low sleep quality and sleep problems (see Griffiths et al, 2018). Recently, there has been a rapidly increasing number of studies aiming to explain the mechanisms by which WA affects sleep disturbance (Gillet, Morin, Sandrin, & Houle, 2018;Hancock et al, 2019;Reiner et al, 2019;Scafuri et al, 2019;Spagnoli, Balducci, Fabbri, Molinaro, & Barbato, 2019;Spagnoli, Balducci, Scafuri, Maiorano, & Buono, 2018). This is an especially appreciated effort since sleep is closely related to health and mortality (Gallicchio & Kalesan, 2009).…”

“…Empirical studies within the online gaming literature (Brunborg et al 2013;Charlton and Danforth 2007) supported the distinction of high engagement and addiction with the latter including additional components such as withdrawal symptoms that manifest when the individual cannot engage in the given activity. In addition, while addiction is often associated with negative outcomes, this is not necessarily the case for high engagement (e.g., Deleuze et al 2018;Gillet et al 2018;Tóth-Király et al 2019b). For these reasons, OP might be considered as a potential precursor of addiction.…”

“…Second, assuming the identification of leadership profiles displaying such a combination, this study seeks to expand knowledge on within-domain exacerbation in the leadership literature by examining the joint effects these antagonistic behaviors on two work-related outcomes encompassing employees' well-being (thriving at work) and work-related behaviors (behavioral empowerment). To do so, we rely on an emerging hybrid mixture regression approach (Chénard-Poirier et al, 2017;Gillet et al, 2018) which provides a way to simultaneously meet both objectives, namely: (a) identifying leadership profiles characterized by distinct CLB/DLB combinations while also (b) considering how these profiles differ in their patterns of associations between CLB/DLB and employees' levels of thriving and behavioral empowerment.…”
