Investigating the Effect of Polymeric Approaches on Circulation Time and Physical Properties of Nanobubbles

Abstract: This study identified the relevance of polymeric modifications to nanobubbles for an improved circulating lifetime, which would be essential for application of these systems in passive drug or gene targeting via the enhanced permeability and retention effect.

“…The NMBs used in the present study lacked stability in vivo, and the encapsulated C 3 F 8 gas was readily released and dispersed into the fluid around the NMBs (du Toit et al 2011;Sax and Kodama 2013). In previous experiments in which NMBs were circulated through blood vessels Li et al 2013a), echogenicity in the proper-ALN was found to decrease by 50%, 2 min after intravenous injection; this is consistent with the observations illustrated in Figure 3Bb.…”

“…2,10 More recently, submicron-sized bubbles, termed nanobubbles, have been designed and proposed as a prospective tool for gene delivery. [11][12][13][14] An advantage of nanosized bubbles is their potential extravasation capacity and their potential to accumulate in pathological tissues via the enhanced permeability and retention effect. 15,16 In a previous study, we developed DNA-loaded diethylaminoethyl (DEAE)-dextran nanobubbles as gene delivery systems.…”
