Investigating the Effect of Several Parameters on the Gelation Behavior of Partially Hydrolyzed Polyacrylamide–Hexamine–Hydroquinone Gels

Abstract: The polymer gel systems are mostly used for the control of excessive water production during enhanced oil recovery operations in mature oil fields. However, these polymer gels are not stable in the high-temperature and high-salinity reservoir. Keeping these in mind, an attempt was made to investigate the effect of several parameters on the gelation time of polymer gels for its suitable application in the oil fields. In this paper, a polymer gel comprised of partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide as a water-solubl… Show more

“…Water control is a key issue in most of hydrocarbon reservoirs (Liu et al 2010;Salehi et al 2014;Yadav and Mahto 2013a). Polymer gels are widely used to control water production by blocking the high-permeability zones in heterogeneous mature reservoirs and then diverting the water to the low-permeability zones during enhanced oil recovery operations.…”

“…8,9 The use of steam foam, phenolic resin, and superfine cement has been reported. 10,11 However, the effect of steam foam is limited due to the poor foam stability. Although the phenolic resin can be cross-linked at the formation temperature and turn to be a rigid plug, it is too expensive for large-scale applications.…”

“…In previous studies, the gelation behavior of resorcinol-hexamethylenetetramine-HPAM gel was evaluated by studying the effects of component concentration and other influencing parameters such as salinity, temperature and pH on bulk gelation, which can contribute to screening and optimizing the gel formulation before attempting field treatment (Sengupta et al 2012;Yadav and Mahto 2013). However, during polymer gel treatments, the treatment efficiency is not satisfactory as expected.…”
