Investigating the effectiveness of immersive VR skill training and its link to physiological arousal

Abstract: This paper details the motivations, design, and analysis of a study using a fine motor skill training task in both VR and physical conditions. The objective of this between-subjects study was to (a) investigate the effectiveness of immersive virtual reality for training participants in the 'buzz-wire' fine motor skill task compared to physical training and (b) investigate the link between participants' arousal with their improvements in task performance. Physiological arousal levels in the form of electro-derm… Show more

“…To register the emotions and physiological arousal levels caused by the VR immersion, both self-assessment and objective psychophysiological measurements, such as electroencephalography (EEG), functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI), electro-dermal activity (EDA), and ECG (Electrocardiogram) are commonly used [6,7,[14][15][16]. These might be purposefully manipulated by virtual-visual stimuli, such as natural, urban, or industrial landscape environments [17][18][19].…”

“…With the development of science and technology, computer virtual reality technology is also improving and gradually applied to different fields. Combining computer virtual reality technology with sports training increases the vitality of sports, enhances the effect of sports training, and promotes the physical and mental development of trainers [6][7]. At the same time, through computer virtual reality technology simulation, sports learning and training can also maximize the mobilization of physical and mental senses, prompting the optimal learning and training effect.…”

“…In recent years, China's education reform has been deepening, in order to adapt to the new concepts and new requirements put forward by modern education, and seriously implement the guiding ideology of "health first" [1][2][3]. All high schools and colleges of physical education have reformed and innovated the original physical education curriculum in order to meet the growing social demand for high-quality sports specialists, and classroom teaching is undoubtedly the main channel and breakthrough of curriculum reform [4][5][6].…”
