Investigating the impact of an urban community school effort on middle school STEM‐related student outcomes over time through propensity score matched methods

Abstract: This study investigates the impact of an urban community school reform initiative that focuses on an immigrant and refugee population in middle school. A 6th-8th grade cohort of students in the community school are followed over time and compared to a propensity score matched group on overall GPA, mathematics, and science academic outcomes and traditional college preparedness indicators. Further, a deeper dive into the intersection of gender and race/ethnicity was examined on all outcomes.Findings revealed tha… Show more

“…Contrastingly, RCCSR students defied this expected overall downward trajectory and instead saw slight increases in their ELA grades with average (Blank et al, 2003;Dryfoos, 2000). Further, these findings fit within literature that has shown when students' academic and non-academic needs are met through comprehensive school-based services, higher academic outcomes are found (Maier et al, 2017;Sondergeld, Provinzano, & Johnson, 2020). In addition to the statistically significant difference in ELA grades by group over time, this study's results are also important from a practical perspective.…”

“…Although some positive FSCS impact outcomes related to academic achievement in math and ELA have been documented (e.g., Castrechini & London, 2012; Klein & Bolus, 2002; Provinzano et al, 2020; Sheldon & Epstein, 2005), limited evidence of community school impact on science achievement exists (e.g., Sondergeld et al, 2020). Also, research on the influence of community schools on educational outcomes, to date, is mainly correlational with little causal evidence.…”

“…CCW (Yosso, 2005) and the new design of schools (Lawson & van Veen, 2016) lend themselves well to this research because both advocate for systems-level change, yet prescribe multifaced solutions to complex problems (i.e., oppression and discrimination, concentrated poverty and disadvantage) that are localized and place-based. FSCS are intended to disrupt inequitable systems and provide students, families, and community members with equitable access to in- and out-of-school resources, including partner-led academic supports This method has been noted as effective when integrated with broader programming efforts, such as STEM-focused curricular initiatives (Sondergeld et al, 2020).…”
