Investigating Variability in L2 Development: Extending a Complexity Theory Perspective on L2 Writing Studies and Authorial Voice

Abstract: Applying a complex dynamic systems view of writing development, this study explored how developmental variability can contribute to conceptualizing changes in L2 writing. Forty-two writing samples were collected from one Thai university student in Thailand studying actuary science in English. The writing samples were composed over four years and were holistically coded for degrees of appropriate authorial voice. Descriptive techniques, including linear and polynomial trend lines and a min-max graph, informed a… Show more

“…Positive feedback not only brought about positive emotions in Adam, which is similar to the previous findings (e.g., He, 2013;Shirvan et al, 2020), but it also served to encourage Adam to use more complex sentences adaptively. This corroborates previous findings indicating that a complex system is self-adaptive, in other words, students adjust their cognitive and language resources to perform adaptive language behaviors under different conditions (e.g., Larsen-Freeman, 2006;Evans and Larsen-Freeman, 2020;Fogal, 2020;Chang and Zhang, 2021). According to He (2013), prompt feedback from Pigaiwang can effectively spark students' writing interest and help students pay more attention to linguistic form.…”

“…For example, if the L1 and L2 are similar or congruent, the L2 will be easier to learn (Verspoor, 2012). Additionally, learners' motivation, attention, cognitive ability and the like, also significantly influence L2 development, because motivation, as a single component of a system, may drive learning and interact with other components at different timeframes (Fogal, 2019). Larsen-Freeman (2018) argues that language development is reframed from the perspective of learners within the framework of CDST.…”

“…Given that CDST mainly addresses the complexity and variability of language development system by adopting a holistic methodology, researchers have drawn on this theoretical framework to investigate various research topics in the field of applied linguistics, particularly changes over time across system components and interactions, such as listening strategies (Jihua Dong, 2016), lexical learning (Zheng, 2016), L2 writing (Fogal, 2019; Larsen-Freeman, 2006; Verspoor et al, 2012), interpreting (Yanping Dong, 2018), language advising and motivation (Castro, 2018), group work in interactive tasks (Poupore, 2018), and learner agency (Larsen-Freeman, 2019). This shift in perspective, referred to as the complexity or dynamical turn, concentrates on the understanding that language learning and teaching is a complex system (Castro, 2018).…”

“…Los patrones de los subsistemas lingüísticos de los estudiantes son diferentes y su grado de variación es proporcional a la eficiencia en el aprendizaje (Lowie et al, 2017;Saadat & Alavi, 2017). Una variabilidad significativa genera mejoras en la escritura del segundo idioma (Fogal, 2020).…”
