Investigation and modelling of greenhouse gas emissions resulting from waste collection and transport activities

Abstract: Greenhouse gas emissions resulting from municipal solid waste management activities and the associated climate change impacts are getting great attention worldwide. This study investigates greenhouse gas emissions and their distribution during waste collection and transport activities in the Dammam region of Saudi Arabia. Greenhouse gas emissions and associated global warming factors were estimated based on diesel fuel consumption during waste collection and transport activities. Then, waste collection and tra… Show more

“…And, lastly, the municipalities that sent their waste to a land ll, situated more than 25 km away from the waste generating center, should establish TS, as the lack of them and the use of smaller sized trucks causes higher global warming factors (Yaman et al 2019).…”

“…This is a telltale that both these parameters require more attention in order to collect regional data and produce more reasonable studies. Speci c factors like the type of WCV, geography and tra c of the city and building density (Gentil et al 2010), vehicle's capacity use, MSW density, and driver's behavior can impact the fuel consumption signi cantly (Yaman et al 2019). As for emissions, there are regional and technical particularities that affect these gures, such as fuel characteristics, used engine technology and maintenance.…”

“…GHG is the emission from fossil fuel consumption in the process of waste collection and transportation [ 12 ] and usually the environmental effect of GHG emissions is approximated by equivalents ( ). Furthermore, GHG emissions show an approximately linear relation to the fuel consumption of a vehicle [ 22 ], we estimate GHG emissions based on fuel consumption and express its effect in terms of during waste collection and transportation activities.…”

“…There is potential to switch from waste to energy and contribute to economic, social, and environmental benefits (Aracil et al, 2018;Yılmaz & Abdulvahitoğlu, 2019;Yaman et al, 2019;Yaman et al, 2020). Biogas digesters have been known for their multi-purpose nature, treating waste and producing energy at the same time.…”
