Investigation and Optimization of a Spare Wheel Well to Reduce Vehicle Interior Noise

Abstract: Optimization of structures with the intention to reduce noise emission has become an efficient tool during the past decade. Various approaches and applications have been published and will be briefly reviewed in this paper. Then, the structural component model of a spare wheel well and the fluid model of a sedan cabin are described. The noise transfer function is defined as the sound pressure level in vicinity of the driver's ear due to a harmonic force excitation at engine supports. The frequency range of 0-1… Show more

“…One category consists of seeking an optimal distribution of piecewise constant shell thickness [68,133,145,199,325]. shell curvature was optimized [214][215][216][217][218]. The paper of Choi et al [68] indicates use of 36,000 parameters.…”

“…These applications usually require many variables. a roof [218], a dashboard [215], a hat-shelf [214], a floor structure [216] and a spare-wheel well [217]. Hermans and Brughmans [145] treated the vehicle body as an assembly of several components being investigated independently in a first design stage.…”
