Paint sludge (PS) is a waste product coming from spray application of paints in automotive industry. For the first time, this work assessed the economic costs and environmental impacts connected to recycling PS in bituminous binders for asphalt pavement applications. Previous works have demonstrated that PS could be used as a replacement of up to 20% (w/w) of neat bitumen in the production of hot mixture asphalts (HMAs), without worsening the technical performances of pavements. The annual production of PS from Italian automotive plants (3000 t/year) could be accommodated in a paved area of 1.64 km2 that, when employed in local roads, with an average width of 5 m, corresponds to approximately 330 km. Costs for treating PS to be prepared for recycling resulted in 144 €/t raw PS. This cost was of the same order, or even less, of that required for PS incineration or disposal in a landfill for hazardous waste (250–300 €). The LCA analysis revealed that the production of HMAs by employing a binder that contains 20% (w/w) of PS, reduced the gross energy requirement (GER) and global warming potential (GWP) indexes by 15% and 39%, respectively, compared to an HMA produced with the traditional process.

Due to the rapid increase in population growth, energy and synthetic material consumption, the materials which reduce energy consumption like isolation structures have been gaining an importance after results of many innovative researches. So far, the most part of energy reducing materials have been produced by synthetic chemicals and therefore have a detrimental effect on the natural world and living organisms. Rigid polyurethane foam (PUF) is mainly manufactured by synthetic raw materials and widely used as an isolation material for different applications. Here, we present a novel composite PUFs contain different amount of natural materials as fiberglass, straw and basalt fibers between 0.5% and 2% by weight. Thermal conductivity is varied from 0.02109 to 0.02260 W/(m.K) by using 1% and 2% for fiberglass and straw, respectively. Furthermore, there is no significant change for the compression strengths of the resulted composites when compare with virgin PUF except 2% fiberglass which demonstrates about 70 kPa performance. We strongly believe that lowering synthetic raw materials content for PUF by incorporating natural materials will have a proportionately less harmful impact on the ecology and natural sustainability while keep similar thermal and physical properties to those of the current 100% synthetic PUFs.

Surface coating, paint and allied products industry is one of the major productions in the world due to the increase of urbanization and rapid development. Paint industry offers a variety of colours and types of paint to serve as needed. However, global production of paint consumption may lead to large volume of waste generated which affects people’s health and creating environmental surroundings such as landfill area, stormwater drainage and natural waterways. Therefore, this paper highlights the application of paint generally in terms of productions, treatment processes and waste management, as well as finding out the necessary steps to be taken to minimise wastes caused by productions. Furthermore, the understanding of these wastes may contribute to reduce the negative environmental impact and provide sustainable development by utilizing and promoting the paint waste as building material.
