Investigation into the influence of post-weld heat treatment on the microstructure and hardness of Inconel X-750

Abstract: This work describes a post-weld heat treatment for a precipitation-hardened nickel alloy. Inconel X-750 is a nickel-based superalloy for gas tungsten arc welding processes. The materials were heat-treated in two steps: solution and aging. The post-weld heat treatment variables examined in this study included post-weld heat treatment temperatures of 705°C, 775°C, and 845°C and post-weld heat treatment time of 2-24 h in 2-h increments. The resulting materials were examined using the full factorial design of expe… Show more

“…Chromium carbides (Cr 23 C 6 ) were coincident with γ at 44º for sintering temperatures between 1068 and 1150 ºC. The amount of Cr 23 C 6 tend to decrease with the increase of temperature once this phase due its dissolution into the matrix [19]. Niobium (Nb) is an element of Inconel 718 alloy which is highly predisposed to segregation, and consequently form precipitates.…”

“…XRD spectrum revealed the precipitation of chromium carbides ( Cr 23 C 6 ) at 1068ºC sintering temperature but its dissolution at T1150P60 condition. Knowing that carbides enhance the hardness results, the decrease of the amount of Cr 23 C 6 with temperature may are responsible for the decrease on hardness from 292.00 ± 0.00 to 283.90 ± 9.10 HV when considering 60 MPa as pressure sintering [19].…”

“…The GTA weldments show the presence of MoNi 4 , M 6 C, and M 3 C phases. 36,40 The segregation of Mo (Figure 8) at the last stage of the solidification primes to the development of these phases in the GTA weldment. In the case of PCGTA, NiCrCoMo phase is observed.…”

“…In general, post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) must be carried out in the precipitation-strengthened nickel-based superalloy to improve the properties of the weldments [13][14][15]. Solid-solution-strengthened alloys also require PWHT to minimize the segregation (as a result of solidification in the fusion zone, during welding) in order to maintain the solid solution strengthening effect in the fusion zone.…”
