Ba 6 (Bi 1Àx Eu x ) 9 B 79 O 138 (0 r x r 1): synergetic changing of the wavelength of Bi 3+ absorption and the red-to-orange emission ratio of Eu 3+ † Very recently, a novel barium bismuth borate Ba 6 Bi 9 B 79 O 138 (BBBO) was shown to be a new analogue of REBaB 9 O 16 (RE = rare earth), which is a family of excellent phosphor hosts, because it has two types of cationic positions suitable for bi-and tri-valent activators (or sensitizers). In this study, we prepared Eu 3+ -to-Bi 3+ substituted solid solutions Ba 6 (Bi 1Àx Eu x ) 9 B 79 O 138 (0 r x r 1) and performed a systematic UV-photoluminescence investigation. As anticipated, efficient energy transfer occurs in the whole series of compounds and the majority of the energy absorbed by Bi 3+ was transmitted to Eu 3+ , causing a great enhancement of Eu 3+ emission. More interestingly, the Eu 3+ -to-Bi 3+ substitution leads to a centrosymmetric-tononcentrosymmetric transition of the local coordination symmetry of the trivalent cations due to the size difference between Eu 3+ and Bi 3+ . This is observed in the synergetic changing of the wavelength of Bi 3+ 1 S 0 -3 P 1 absorption (excitation spectra) and the red-to-orange emission ratio (emission spectra) when changing x. Understanding structure-property relationship is the key to rationally design superior materials. REBaB9O16 (RE = La-Lu, Y) is a series of well-known photoluminescent hosts, which has been extensively studied but without any structure details reported. We prepared its new analogue Ba6Bi9B79O138 (BBBO) and proved the isomorphism by X-ray diffraction studies, in spite of the fact that they possess different cationic compositions. In addition, we successfully prepared complete solid solutions Ba6(Bi1-xEux)9B79O138 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1). Single crystal XRD characterizations on a qualified crystal of BBBO proposed an ordered structure model in the noncentrosymmetric space group R3. It possesses a layered-type structure composed of BO4-BiO6-BO4 sandwiched layers and polyborate inter-layer groups. Ba 2+ atoms locate in the inter-layer cavities. There are three and two independent Bi and Ba atoms, respectively. In other words, we took one more step forward in understanding the structure of REBaB9O16 by analysing its new analogue. It is believed to be helpful for further interpreting and developing REBaB9O16-based optical materials.

The red phosphor EuBaB 9 O 16 was prepared by the conventional solid-state reaction method. The crystallite phase of the phosphor was observed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns. Scanning electron micrographs were obtained to study the morphologic features and the particle size of the phosphor. The photoluminescence (PL) excitation and emission spectra, temperature dependence of luminescence intensity and the decay curves were investigated. The phosphor, when excited with near-UV wavelength radiation, exhibited an intense red luminescence. The characteristic emission of Eu 3þ ions corresponding to the electric dipole transition 5 D 0 ! 7 F 2 was located at 613 nm under 254-and 365-nm excitation. Its room temperature fluorescent decay profile exhibits a singleexponent shape with a decay time of 2.03 ms. The color coordinates were also discussed. In addition, the PL properties of EuBaB 9 O 16 were compared with those of La 0.9 Eu 0.1 BaB 9 O 16 and Gd 0.9 Eu 0.1 BaB 9 O 16 .
