Investigation of abbreviated 4 and 8 item versions of the PTSD Checklist 5

Abstract: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a significant public health concern associated with marked impairment across the lifespan. Exposure to traumatic events alone, however, is insufficient to determine if an individual has PTSD. PTSD is a heterogeneous diagnosis such that assessment of all 20 symptoms is problematic in time-limited treatment settings. Brief assessment tools that identify those at risk for PTSD and measure symptom severity are needed to improve access to care and assess treatment response. T… Show more

“…Attempting to respond to such assessments via a mobile application would be highly burdensome to the patient, and might result in higher rates of noncompliance. There is a need for abbreviated scales to measure PTSD symptoms that cater to mobile administration [36], [37]. Third, a range of constructs that are understood to be important to post-trauma recovery processes, including physiological measures, hospital-based variables, and environmental assessments, were not collected [10], [38], [39].…”

“…These included the eight items of the abbreviated PCL-5 (Price, Szafranski, Van Stolk-Cooke, & Gros, 2016) and an additional item from the PCL-5 assessing sleep (PCL-5 item 20). The tenth item assessed pain on a scale of 0 to 10.…”

“…Separate trauma-specific versions of symptom severity measures have also been developed (e.g., military vs. civilian [33]). In addition, more brief versions have been proposed to further reduce the time demands, but not the accuracy, of symptom severity questionnaires such as the Primary Care PTSD screen (PC-PTSD [25,34]).…”
