Investigation of Acoustic Properties of Poroelastic Asphalt Mixtures in Laboratory and Field Conditions

Abstract: Measures for the improvement of acoustic conditions in the vicinity of roads include the construction of pavement structures with low-noise surfaces with optimal macrotexture and the highest possible sound absorption coefficient. Laboratory evaluation of acoustic properties of a designed asphalt mixture before its placement in the pavement is a good solution. Currently, the most popular method for the determination of the sound absorption coefficient of various construction materials under laboratory condition… Show more

“…During all five stages of selection of the poroelastic mix composition, about one hundred twenty variants were tested, differing in mineral mix, content and fractions of rubber, content and type of asphalt binder, and type of additives (reinforcing fibres, WMA additives, and hydrated lime additive). In total, with the addition of samples taken from the test sections that differed in the method of compaction and type of interlayer bonding technique, over 200 variants were tested [ 11 , 12 , 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 , 24 , 25 ].…”

“…Construction of the section in Dąbrówka and Galaktyczna Street in Gdańsk is presented in detail in [ 24 ]. Detailed information about second short test section is given in [ 25 ]. In the case of the third long test section (K), the selection of poroelastic mixtures to be used was based on additional tests from the second short test sections constructed in 2020 (MTM2).…”

“…Such pavements include, among others: BBTM (French for Beton Bitumineux Tres Mince), SDA (Semi-Dense Asphalt), PA (Porous Asphalt), noise reduced stone mastic asphalt SMA LA (German for Lärm Arm), PERS (Poroelastic Road Surface) [ 2 ]. Research has shown that the use of such mixtures for the wearing course of road pavements allows the reduction of noise to 10–12 dB [ 3 , 4 ]. Asphalt mixtures from this group are characterized by air void content in the range of 15–25%.…”
