Investigation of carbon fiber composite stiffened skin with vacuum assisted resin infusion/prepreg co-curing process

Abstract: Co-cured vacuum assisted resin infusion process (co-VARI process), which combined vacuum assisted resin infusion (VARI) with prepreg vacuum bag only process (VBO), was adopted to fabricate T-shaped stiffened skin with non-crimp fabric (NCF) stiffener and prepreg skin. During compaction stage of co-VARI process, prepreg resin impregnated fiber fabric under elevated temperature and vacuum pressure. This phenomenon was characterized by fluorescent micrographs with different holding temperature and time. Its influ… Show more

“…It is noted that value of reduced modulus of resin matrix is far smaller than that of carbon fiber. 15,18 Moreover, the absolute reduced modulus of resin matrix is susceptible to the local roughness of sample surface for different locations. Therefore, the reduced modulus value of injection resin is selected as benchmark and the ratios of reduced modulus for other indentions are listed in Table 1.…”

“…stringer stiffened panel and spars, have been successfully fabricated by co-LCM processes with significant cost reduction. [7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15] Fratta et al 11 investigated the co-VARI process, applying out-of-autoclave (OoA) prepreg stack and dry fiber preform with various processing conditions. The results showed that co-VARI process was a potential alternative to sole prepreg process and VARI process due to the satisfactory mechanical properties and cost-effective saving.…”

“…So far, a variety of composite manufacturing techniques such as autoclave prepreg molding, 6–12 resin transfer molding (RTM), 13,14 resin film infusion, 15,16 vacuum assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM), 1719 or the combination of thereof (combined wet winding/prepreg, 20 combined prepreg/RTM, 21 combined out-of-autoclave prepreg/VARTM 22,23 ) have been employed to integrally cure structures. Amongst the various methods, VARTM is the most cost-effective technique that requires neither autoclave nor prepreg and offers a great advantage to fabricate very large parts using inexpensive tooling.…”
