The present study investigates the usability of lignocellulosic kapok fibers as a reinforcement for lightweight composites. Kapok fibers are modified by dewaxing followed by a silane coupling agent at different concentrations. The crystallographic structure and the alignment of silane linkage polymer chains on fiber structure are examined using X‐ray Diffraction (XRD). The linkage of chemical bonds (SiOC And SiOSi) between the polymer structure of the fiber and silane coupling agent is confirmed from FTIR spectroscopy. Additionally, the small angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS) study is done considering kapok fiber as a nonideal two‐phase system and the study investigates the modification occurring within the macromolecular structure of the kapok fiber. Following the grafting of silanes onto the fiber, silane‐modified kapok fiber‐reinforced epoxy composites are fabricated using the hand lay‐up technique. The chemical treatments on the fiber, enhanced flexural, tensile and impact strength of the composites by 132%, 102%, and 146% respectively.

This study underscores the potential of silanized kapok fiber (KF) as a lightweight, eco‐friendly reinforcement for aerospace cabin interiors, emphasizing electrical insulation and mechanical resilience. KF/epoxy composites were fabricated via hand lay‐up, and silane treatment improved flexural, tensile, impact, and storage modulus by 131%, 101%, 145%, and 105%, respectively, due to enhanced fiber‐matrix interaction. Dielectric and impedance spectroscopy revealed reduced dielectric constant, loss, and AC conductivity due to the removal of polar groups and compact composite structure. Additionally, 9% silane concentration decreased water absorption by 3.9% over 400 h due to the tight packing and binding between the fiber and epoxy. These findings demonstrate that silane treatment enhances fiber‐matrix compatibility, improving the mechanical and overall performance of KF/epoxy composites.Highlights KFs are treated with silane coupling agents. Silane treatment enhanced interfacial, chemical and mechanical bonding. Mechanical and electrical properties of composites enhanced with silane grafting on KF. Tg of the composites increased after silane treatment. Explored density and demonstrated reduced water absorption properties of the composites.

The main objective of the present research is to investigate the mechanical and electrical properties of multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNTs) filled pineapple and kenaf fiber‐based hybrid laminated composite structures using the hand layup technique. 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5 wt%. of MWCNTs are incorporated into the proposed composite structures. The incorporation of MWCNTs into the hybrid composite structure increases flexural, tensile and impact strength by 173%, 53%, and 29% respectively. The morphological studies are presented to understand fiber pull‐out, matrix breakage, delamination and debonding phenomena. Further, the addition of MWCNTs into the laminated composites decreased the water absorption properties from 8.3% to 4.3%; however, the density of the composites increased slightly due to a more compact structure. The incorporation of MWCNTs into the laminated composite structure enhances the electrical properties such as dielectric constant and AC conductivity by forming a conductive network. The and of developed composites increased by 3.0 and 6.8 times due to the interfacial polarization. The results from the study demonstrate that incorporating MWCNTS into pineapple and kenaf fiber‐based hybrid laminated composite structures helped to enhance both the mechanical and electrical properties, making it a primary choice for electromagnetic interface shielding applications.Highlights Laminated composites are fabricated using the hand layup technique. , and of the composites are increased by 173%, 56%, and 29%.
