Investigation of Dimension Stone on the Island Brač—Geophysical Approach to Rock Mass Quality Assessment

Abstract: A site located on the island of Brač is known in history for world-famous architectural stone and stone mining, dating all the way back to ancient Greek and Roman times. The most famous building constructed from the stone from Brač is the Diocletian Cesar Palace in the town Split. Prospective new locations for quarries are still required because the demand for the stone from the island is still high. This paper presents a review of undertaken geophysical investigations, as well as engineering geologic site pro… Show more

“…The shallow seismic refraction method is ideal for estimating, with reasonable accuracy, the depth of different geological interfaces for different purposes such as geotechnical [49] and engineering geological investigations [50], site characterization of landslide areas [51] hydrogeological analysis [52] (Prekopová et al, 2016) archaeological exploration [53,54] and site characterizations of karst areas for large penetration and at high spatial resolution [3,20,55]. Further details about the application of the method can be found in [56].…”

“…In recent years, the quarrying industry has experienced increasing demands for nondestructive sensing techniques to optimize stone production, from on-site extraction operation, to quality control of the extracted blocks [1][2][3][4][5][6][7]. Fractures present in building stones (either in situ large fractures or small defects of the produced stones) have always concerned the quarry people as well as engineers engaged in the restoration and conservation of stone monuments.…”

“…Jug et al [1] combined several surface non-destructive geophysical methods, including multichannel analysis of surface waves (MASW), shallow refraction seismic (SRS), electrical resistivity tomography (ERT), and ground-penetrating radar (GPR), to investigate dimension stone on the Island Brač in Croatia, where the methods are key tools to assess the quality of rock mass and classify its suitability for exploitation purposes. Finally, rock mass was classified into three categories according to its suitability for dimension stone exploitation, where each category is defined by compressional and shear seismic velocities as well as electrical resistivity.…”
