Investigation of Friedel‐Crafts Alkylation in the Presence of Supported Sulfonic Acid on Silica Gel

Abstract: From the Reaction between cellulose and chloro sulfonic acid was prepared sulfuric acid cellulose composition as a new solid acid. The solid acid supported on silica gel and then as an effective catalyst in Friedel-Crafts alkylation of alcohols and aromatic compounds was used. The reaction progress was controlled using thin layer chromatography and the reaction products were analyzed using IR spectroscopy devise. The results show this new catalyst is effective in the friedel crafts alkylation and C-C bond form… Show more

“…Since product B 2-methyldiphenylmethane (electrophilic substitution product) is more thermodynamically stable and kinetically favorable, this material was observed as the major product. The rate constant for the reaction was calculated to be 2.91, which is quite good as compared to the previously reported literature and considering that our synthesized catalyst procedures are straightforward and economical. ,, Previously, in the case of iridium- and scandium-based metal–organic framework (MOF), a greater TON has been reported compared to this work (TON = 115). Iridium 42 -based different MOFs give TONs of 530 [{IrCp*Cl2}2/AgOTf] and 950 [{IrCp*(Otf)2}2/1,3-di- n -butyl-imida-zolylidene, {IrCp*(OTf)2}2/1,3-di- n -methyl-4 methyl imidazole, and {IrCp*(OTf)2}2/1,2-di- n -methyl imidazole], whereas scandium 11 -based MOF gives a TON of 490 {Sc(OSO2C8F17)3}.…”

“…Asymmetric synthesis targets selective synthesis of just one mirror image form of a specific molecule. Electrophilic substitution reactions are also an important class of reactions that allow the introduction of a substituent based on specific requirements. , The general method utilized for methyl diphenylmethane synthesis is through Friedel–Craft’s alkylation of benzyl chloride with toluene in the presence of aluminum chloride . Benzyl chloride and its derivatives are reported as extremely hazardous substances in the United States as defined in Section 302 of the U.S.…”
