Investigation of graphite effect on the mechanical and tribological properties of Al 7075-SiC-graphite hybrid metal matrix composites

Abstract: The aluminium metal matrix composite reinforced with ceramic material of Silicon carbide (SiC) has good mechanical properties. However, aluminium based ceramic composites require improvements in their lubrication and tribological properties. In this study an attempt is made in the development of a new material through powder metallurgy technique by the addition of Graphite, which acts as a solid lubricant. This work investigated the influence of graphite on the wear behaviour of Al 7075/SiC /X wt.% graphite(X=0… Show more

“…The formed fragmented oxide layer or particles sometimes acts as a lubricating agent and thus this oxide layer reduces weight loss. From literature, it was found that in titanium alloy at higher load and sliding distance there was the formation oxide islands or layers [24,25,26,27]. But in this research, we did not see any metal oxide formation for mentioned process parameter except for SS316L material.…”

“…The sacri cial yield strength of 8% for AlSi-10 was not remarkable with gain of hardness value to 21% when compared with AlSi-0 composite were represented in gure 11. This was also due to the presence of hard and brittle particles of nano silica content [9,[22][23][24]. The presence of nano silica particles in the soft matrix of Al6061 created the hard and strong bonds.…”

“…The graphite-containing hybrid composites showed better wear-resistance characteristics [3,4]. The AA7075 hybrid metal matrix composite reinforced with silicon carbide (SiC) ceramic material has good mechanical properties and graphite influences the wear behavior using powder metallurgy [5]. The reinforcement particulate is used to improve the microhardness and surface roughness of nanohybrid metal matrix composites.…”
