Investigation of hemorheological parameters at the diagnosis and the follow-up of nutritional vitamin B12 deficient children

Abstract: We aimed to investigate the effects of vitamin B12 deficiency on hemorheological parameters, and the changes in these parameters following vitamin B12 treatment. 33 patients (mean-age:7 ± 5.7 years) diagnosed as nutritional vitamin B12 deficiency, and 31 age and sex matched controls (mean-age:7.1 ± 5.2 years) were enrolled. Erythrocyte deformability and aggregation were determined by an ectacytometer, plasma and whole blood viscosities by a cone-plate rotational viscometer. The differences between patients and… Show more

“…In older children, other factors may be associated with vitamin B 12 deficiency, such as the absence of animal-derived foods or fortified foods ( 6 ) , a vegetarian diet ( 7 ) , low socio-economic level ( 8 ) and infection by gastrointestinal parasites ( 9 ) . Clinical presentations of vitamin B 12 deficiency include erythrocyte deformability ( 10 ) and neurological changes, which can occur in the absence of haematological abnormality ( 11 ) . The early diagnosis and treatment of vitamin B 12 deficiency in infants and children is important as long-term deficiency can cause developmental delay, failure to thrive, and clinical and neurological symptoms that can be irreversible ( 3 , 5 ) .…”
