Investigation of hole quality in rotary ultrasonic drilling of borosilicate glass using RSM

Abstract: The present article emphasizes on reducing the edge chipping and taper during rotary ultrasonic drilling of one of the most demanded ceramic glasses "BK-7." Statistical tools of design of experiments and backing plate were adopted as two distinct approaches to curb the chipping damage. Central composite design has been conjugated with desirability function for framing the design matrix. This investigation also emphasizes to study the effect of process variables-spindle speed, ultrasonic power and feed rate-on … Show more

“…Micro-hole is a well-known feature and requires much attention in a variety of applications to enhance the functional capabilities of the micro-devices [1][2][3][4]. Micro-hole has wide application in numerous areas, for instance, as a probe card for testing semiconductor devices, as shadow mask containing arrays of micro-hole in circular or rectangular shape used in cathode-ray tube (CRT) display, as pentacene thin-film transistors [5,6] and many other applications such as in injection nozzles of the diesel fuel, drug delivery orifices, cooling channels of the turbine blades, spinnerets holes and inkjet printer nozzles [7,8].…”

“…RSM based modeling techniques are assorted in wide range of fields and several researchers have adopted this technique in non-traditional machining operations such as plasma arc cutting, electrical discharge machining and ultrasonic machining processes. Experiments are conducted based on CCD and mathematical models are formulated by using RSM techniques and the optimal solutions of machining parameter combinations are determined [36,37].…”

“…In this direction, the ultrasonically actuated burr may prevent osteonecrosis and neural damage during bone grinding. The extraordinary advantages of the ultrasonic actuation have been highlighted by the [14][15][16][17]. In this view, an innovative procedure rotary ultrasonic neurosurgical grinding (RUNG) has been proposed.…”
