The most common cancer worldwide among women is breast cancer. The initiation, promotion, and progression of this cancer result from both internal and external factors. The International Agency for Research on Cancer stated that 18-20% of cancers are linked to infection, and the list of definite, probable, and possible carcinogenic agents is growing each year. Among them, biological carcinogens play a significant role. In this review, data covering infection-associated breast and lung cancers are discussed and presented as possible involvements as pathogens in cancer. Because carcinogenesis is a multistep process with several contributing factors, we evaluated to what extent infection is significant, and concluded that members of the herpesvirus, polyomavirus, papillomavirus, and retrovirus families definitely associate with breast cancer. Detailed studies of viral mechanisms support this conclusion, but have presented problems with experimental settings. It is apparent that more effort needs to be devoted to assessing the role of these viruses in carcinogenesis, by characterizing additional confounding and synergistic effects of carcinogenic factors. We propose that preventing and treating infections may possibly stop or even eliminate certain types of cancers.

A b s t r a c tThe aim of this study was to analyze the prevalence of BK virus, Human Papillomavirus and Epstein-Barr virus in oropharyngeal cancer, and to test our hypothesis that BKV/HPV/EBV co-infection plays a role in oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma. The correlation between viral infection, OSCC, anatomic location, pre-treatment staging, evidence of metastases to lymph nodes, and grading was also investigated. The examination samples were collected from 62 patients from paraffin tissue blocks. Males (90.3%) with, smoking (83.9%) and alcohol abuse (67.7%) problems prevailed in the studied group. G2 histological type was recognized in 80.6% cases. T4 (77.4%) and N2 (56.5%) traits occurred in the majority of patients. No cases of metastasis were observed (M0 100%). HPV -24.2%, EBV -27.4% and BKV 17.7% were detected in the studied samples. We observed co-infection EBV/BKV in 8% of cases, HPV/BKV in 4.8%, and HPV/EBV in 9% cases. Only in two cases co-infection of all three viruses was found.

Objective: Human BK virus (BKV) is a member of the polyomavirus family. In renal transplant recipients, reactivation of BKV may cause the renal-allograft dysfunction. Primary BKV infection usually occurs asymptomatically during childhood. After primer infection, BKV persists latently especially in the urogenital system. Cellular immunity plays an important role in the pathogenesis of BKV infection. The aim of this study was to determine the urinary cytokine responses in patients with BKV infection and associated levels of urinary cytokines and BK viruria. Methods: Urine samples of 72 patients with BKV infection were included in this study. BKV DNAs were detected by using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. The levels of cytokines in urine samples were determined by ELISA. Results: The levels of urinary proinflammatory cytokines in BKV DNA positive patients were significantly higher than those of patients who were BKV DNA negative. In addition, urinary proinflammatory cytokines were also higher in BKV DNA positive patients with high viral load than in patients with low viral load. Conclusion: According to our results, it is suggested that proinflammatory cytokines may play an important role in the pathogenesis of BKV infections. A better understanding of cytokine responses in BKV infections may help to provide new therapeutic approaches to the treatment of BKV infection especially in transplantation patients.
