Investigation of IFC file format for BIM based automated code compliance checking

Abstract: In the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry, a large number of laws and regulations define the technical features and standard requirements of a building. Checking the suitability of the building according to the rules in the building legislation is a human-oriented manual process that is largely based on 2D drawings. Therefore, this process is cumbersome, time consuming and error prone. Today, the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) in the AEC sector continues to increase day by d… Show more

“…A number of different analyses are required to check a design against relevant regulations (e.g., building codes and city ordinances), and the BIM provided as a set of IFC files is likely to be processed by different tools to check them. For this reason, a comprehensive good quality of the models is essential [30,[44][45][46][47]. Entities have to be correctly identified by IFC classes; grouped consistently as IfcSite, IfcBuilding, IfcBuildingStoreys; their grouping as apartments or similar building units would also be appropriate; spaces should be modelled correctly, possibly with the association of functions or foreseen use, since many rules are based on such information, which is also hard to infer in an automated process.…”
