Investigation of Individual Factors Associated with Anxiety in Youth with Autism Spectrum Disorders

Abstract: As youth with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are more likely to experience anxiety than youth in the general population, investigation of associated factors is important for diagnosis and treatment. The present study extended prior research by examining factors associated with caregiver-reported anxiety in 2662 youth (mean age = 8.82 years) with ASD. Logistic regression analyses indicated increases in age, social problems, and cognitive functioning predicted high anxiety group membership. Cognitive functioning… Show more

“…The current findings are not in line with previous cross-sectional studies, since previous studies did find associations between comorbid psychiatric symptoms and ASD symptoms. For example, higher levels of anxiety in individuals diagnosed with ASD were associated with lower quality of social relations (Eussen et al 2013 ) and more social problems (Dubin et al 2015 ). Clearly, more research regarding the longitudinal relationship between comorbid psychiatric symptoms and ASD symptoms is needed, since definite conclusions cannot be drawn based on the few longitudinal studies conducted so far.…”

“…There are also mixed data regarding the differential prevalence rates of anxiety for girls and boys with ASD. Some studies showed that girls with ASD have more anxiety symptoms ( 9 ), and other studies showed that anxiety is more prevalent in boys with ASD ( 20 ). There are more studies showing that anxiety symptoms are equally prevalent in boys and girls with ASD ( 17 , 21 , 22 ).…”

“…The increasing nuance needed to understand and navigate the social world with the onset of adolescence likely creates a significant challenge to ASD adolescents. Surprisingly, little work has been done to investigate the psychophysiological correlates of social stress in the adolescent period, despite the fact that co-occurring problems such as anxiety may have significant impact on functional abilities and quality of life for youth with ASD (Dubin et al 2015; Pellecchia et al 2015). …”
