“…While physical characteristics were the predominant type of counterfeit characteristic (n=36), we also discovered references to several (n=6) chemical properties. Some of these properties (eg, presence of ethylene glycol derivatives) can be identified using ICP-MS 2–4. Other chemical properties require using alternate analytical tools.…”

“…One of the least understood aspects of the illegal cigarette trade is product counterfeiting, the unauthorised and illegal production of cigarettes sold under a brand name without permission from the trademark owner. Independent researchers have largely identified counterfeit Marlboro cigarettes, the most popular counterfeited premium brand in the world, through the examination of tobacco filler (eg, trace element profiling or pollen analysis) 1–6. However, additional research on counterfeit markers is needed to develop reliable methods that can be applied to population-based observational studies (eg, litter pack or pack swap surveys).…”

“…Elevated concentrations of toxic metal element particularly lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) in the illegal cigarettes compared to legal cigarettes are reported in several studies. These high levels toxic metals are due to lack of control and regulation in the manufacturing process and growing environment of illegal cigarettes (He, von Lampe, Wood & Kurti, 2015;Pappas, Polzin, Watson, & Ashley, 2007). Moreover, the tar, nicotine and carbon monoxide contents of illegal cigarettes are recorded at 60 %, 80 % and 133 % more than the legal cigarettes, respectively (Swami, Judd, & Orsini, 2009;Poling, 2012).…”
