Investigation of metallurgical characterization and mechanical properties of double-sided friction stir welding of aluminum 6061 T6 alloy

Abstract: In the present study, the effect of tool tilt angle was investigated to appraise the metallurgical and mechanical behavior of double-sided friction stir welded joints of AA-6061 T6 alloy of 6 mm thick plates, using scrolled shoulder and frustum tool pin geometry. Two friction stir welded joints, with 0° (Joint J1) and 2° (Joint J2) tool tilt angles were fabricated using a fixed travel speed of 50 mm/min and tool rotational speed of 800 rpm. The metallurgical studies carried out by the electron backscattered di… Show more

“…It is well established that the FSW consists of pin-driven and shoulder-driven flow of plasticized material. 25 The upward bent of material, as shown in Region B of Figure 4, indicates that the plasticized material was forced to flow upwards to the shoulder by the extrusion action of the right-hand threaded pin, where the same plasticized material was trapped by the scrolls and then diverted toward the weld center. The material was then pushed back in the downward direction towards the SZ by the shoulder of the tool.…”

“…This method is successfully used in many industries, including aviation, automotive, shipbuilding, spacecraft or railways [2,3]. FSW treatment has great potential for joining similar materials such as aluminum [4,5], copper [6], steel [7] and dissimilar materials such as aluminum and steel [8,9], aluminium and copper [10,11] or aluminium and titanium [12]. In the literature, it can be fi nd also tests of welding of dissimilar alloys with diff erent thicknesses [13].…”
