Investigation of Microplastic Accumulation in Horse Mackerel (Trachurus mediterraneus) Caught in the Black Sea

Abstract: The marine ecosystem is prone to pollution exposure due to a number of factors. Microplastic (MP) pollution has been a severe issue recently; however, studies on marine organisms are limited. The abundance and composition of MPs in highly consumed horse mackerel caught from the Turkish coast of the Black Sea were investigated here. A total of 27 MPs were detected in 121 horse mackerel (Trachurus mediterraneus). The mean of MPs per fish was calculated as 0.22±0.14. While polyethylene was the most prevalent type… Show more

“…Although the abundance was highly variable between the localities, the dominant shape of MPs extracted from the GIT of M. cephalus was fiber (Table 1). The results of this study agree with the dominant shape in the coastal waters (Terzi et al, 2022), some commercially important fish species (Eryaşar et al, 2022;Mutlu et al, 2022) and mollusks (Gedik & Eryaşar, 2020;Gedik & Gozler, 2022) from the Black Sea. Fiber shaped MPs in aquatic environments are mainly attributed to domestic washings of synthetic textiles (Browne et al, 2011).…”

“…The presence or effects of microplastics (MPs) in terrestrial, freshwater and marine ecosystems and organisms have been extensively studied. MPs are found in almost all living things, from zooplankton to the top predator whale in the sea and from insects to mammals in terrestrial areas (Al-Jaibachi et al, 2019;Atamanalp et al, 2021;Betts, 2008;Boerger et al, 2010;Burton, 2003;Cole et al, 2013;Cowie, 2011;Davison & Asch, 2011;Enyoh et al, 2020;Eriksson & Ryan et al, 2009;Fossi et al, 2012;Horton et al, 2017;Mutlu et al, 2022;Murray et al, 2013;Wright et al, 2013;Yıldız et al, 2022).…”
