“…Literature discussing CT scan protocols focuses on minimizing the image noise, but low noise and high separation are 2 different phenomena. A low tube voltage (80 kV) is associated with a high standard deviation in the CT values of the image (Sellakumar and others 2007), as confirmed by our study. Allen and Leymaster (1985) found a 37% reduction in noise by increasing the voltage from 96 to 125 kV; however, CT image noise is mainly due to random variations in detected x‐ray intensity (Jørgensen 2002; Goldman 2007a), and is thus probably a more significant problem in qualitative than in quantitative CT. Also, the samples in this study were small, reducing the need for high energy photons.…”
