Investigation of petrophysical and hydrogeological parameters of the transboundary Nubian aquifer by combining geophysical and hydrogeological methods: a case study of Khartoum state, Sudan

Abstract: This research follows an integrated approach for delineating subsurface lithology and estimating petrophysical and hydrogeological parameters of the Cretaceous Nubian formation aquifer in Khartoum state, Sudan. The Nubian aquifer is a fossilized transboundary regional aquifer that covers more than a quarter of the Sudan’s area. The integrated approach includes geophysical well-logging, surface geophysical electrical methods, and pumping data analysis. Geophysical well-logs, including self-potential (SP), natur… Show more

“…in delineating sulfide deposits, used a combination of geoelectric and ground magnetics methods; [9] combined geoelectric method and direct soil analysis to assess the incessant road failure; and [10] combined the geoelectric method and hydrochemical analysis method to assess the impact of dumpsite to the nearby groundwater system. Even, in the cases of assessment of an object, that is completely physical, some investigators still often use the geoelectric method by combining it with another method [7].…”

“…Hydrogeologists are interested in geoelectrical methods for detecting and examining groundwater aquifers. By using and analyzing geoelectrical data, useful information regarding aquifer characteristics may be acquired, which can help solve various hydrogeological challenges [18]. The current study focuses on the delineation and characterization of the groundwater potential zones in the north Omdurman area using vertical electrical sounding techniques combined with lithological logs.…”

“…The advantage of using geophysical methods over the other methods in aquifer delineation is that they are quick and cost-effective. For this investigation, the VES approach was chosen since the device is basic, field logistics are simple and straightforward, and data analysis is less time-consuming and cost-effective [26]. In analyzing groundwater aquifers, integrating geological and geophysical methods give an appropriate solution for delineating and characterizing groundwater aquifers.…”
