Abstract: To evaluate potential utilization of semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) as a wideband amplification alternative to erbium doped fibre amplifiers (EDFAs) in dense wavelength division multiplexed (DWDM) coherent systems, the authors discuss changes in power consumption levels required for a single bit transmission.
