Investigation of sewage sludge preparation for combustion process

Abstract: Waste disposal is imposed by the European Union under Treaty of Accession concerning waste management order. One of the waste disposal methods is thermal utilisation. The paper presents an investigation of sewage sludge briquettes used as a fuel in combustion process. The research study was carried out on samples taken from the Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant in Bochnia. Briquettes with lime were formed. The analysis of the elementary chemical composition of municipal sewage sludge, the composition of the… Show more

“…The main groups of products arising from the pyrolysis of sewage sludge are as follows [33,35]: • A gas fraction, mainly consisting of hydrogen, methane, carbon dioxide, and carbon monoxide, along with a few minor gases; the calorific value of the pyrolytic gas is approximately 15 MJ/m 3 [36].…”

“…In order to achieve such growth, development of new technologies regarding thermal converting waste will be necessary. For several years in Department of Manufacturing Systems, AGH University of Science and Technology, Krakow, research in order to develop new technologies in binding municipal sewage sludge [3][4]. Results confirmed possibility of obtaining briquettes from wastes using roll presses, which are characterised by compressive strength, allowing transporting the raw material and later utilising it in stoker-fired boilers installed in incineration plants.…”

“…Moreover, the laminar burning velocity controls other important combustion characteristics, such as the flame's spatial distribution. Additionally, the laminar burning velocity is one of the key indicator that helps validate models of the chemical kinetic [3]. Different procedures have been described as a measurement method of burning velocity of gasification gas, such as flat flame, Bunsen flame, stagnation flame, spherically propagating flame, counter-flow flame and heat flux method [4][5][6][7][8][9][10].…”
