Investigation of sheet bending parameters on springback in nickel coated mild steel sheets using response surface methodology

Abstract: Springback is the geometric change during forming process and it affects the dimensional accuracy of a finished product. This study aims to analyse the issue of springback in sheet bending by using response surface methodology (RSM). The effect of punch travel (d), strain hardening index (n), holding time (t), punch velocity (v) and width of the sheet (w) on the springback was explained by contour plots. The experiments were designed as per Centre Composite design and also linear and quadratic polynomial equat… Show more

“…Firstly, a Classical model is considered. The mechanical behaviour of material is initially modelled by the elastic parameters (E and n) in the elastic range and by a reference curve according to the equation (1) in the plastic range of the tensile curve as shown in Figure 7. The software Abaqus/Standard was used to setup the numerical model of 3-point bending test with SB stage.…”

“…In these processes, plastic deformation is followed by some elastic recovery upon unloading called springback (SB). This complex phenomenon is the geometric change during forming process and it affects the dimensional accuracy of a finished product [1]. SB amount should be taken into consideration so as to produce bent sheet metal parts within acceptable tolerance limits [2].…”

“…Particularly, it is more problematic in the assembled parts such as B pillar in automobiles. Factors such as punch radius, lubricant, punch speed, crushing force, dwell time, grain size, thickness are effective on springback [18][19][20][21][22]. Various strain rates are used for forming sheet metal.…”

“…Considering that the relationship between the process parameters and springback is nonlinear, some researchers have committed to conducting research by using statistical methods [11][12][13]. Liu et al utilized the artificial neural network (ANN) method combined with a genetic algorithm to establish a springback model to study the relationship between material thickness, bending radius and springback [14].…”
